Site Update
13 August 2012
For those of you writing to me asking my opinion on Windows 8, I can best summarize it by saying that I have mixed feelings, tending towards the negative. I've been using the Release Preview every day, typically up to 5 hours at a time, for 6 weeks now, and I still do not like the Metro interface (or whatever Microsoft ultimately decides to call it), nor do I find it anything other than a hindrance. There is a jarring transition between Metro and Desktop in Windows 8, especially when you are frequently forced to switch to the fullscreen Metro Start Screen just to do a search for launching a utility for example. Some of the other changes to Windows 8, such as removal of Windows Aero - solely to keep the interface snappy on tablets - is unwarranted on PCs and disappointing. Yet some of the refinements and new features are desirable. The good news is that my opinions are irrelevant, as I am writing the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion for Windows 8 in neutral terms, purely as a descriptive document. One of the benefits of the book will hopefully be that it will allow you to see the details of all the changes and new features, devoid of hype and speculation, and therefore decide whether it is worth upgrading to Windows 8 to meet your needs.
